Japan-focused private capital assets under management (AUM) has expanded, standing at $135bn at the end of 2021, a 30% increase year on year and 77% higher than 2019’s level. While private equity has always been the dominant asset class, Japan-focused venture capital (VC) has witnessed accelerated growth over recent years. VC AUM stood at $44bn as of December 2021, an impressive increase of 54% year on year and quadrupling in just four years. VC has nearly caught up with private equity, which posted $46bn as of December 2021.
