Preqin and the Australian Investment Council present the 2023 edition of our annual Australian Private Capital Market Yearbook. The report tracks activity in the Australian private capital industry using data contained in the Preqin Pro platform, as well as on-the-ground information collected by both Preqin and the Australian Investment Council.
Australia-focused private capital assets under management (AUM) stand at AUD 118bn as of September 2022, growing 21% in the nine months since December 2021, while private equity and venture capital fundraising reached record highs in 2022 amid global macroeconomic headwinds. Stronger merger and acquisition activity in private equity is leading to higher demand for credit facilities to back leveraged buyouts, contributing to the growth of Australia’s private debt industry.
Real estate remains the largest asset class in Australia, although fundraising and deal activity significantly slowed in 2022. Meanwhile, natural resources and infrastructure are benefiting from higher food and commodities prices, as well as Australia’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
